Golden Years Programme

Golden Years, a fun, free/low cost activity programme for people aged 60+ in Camden. Membership is also free. Register to join now.

We run a variety of weekly and one-off activities that include: Singing, Art History, Café and Pub Visits, Day Trips, Walks, Book Club, Art, Intergenerational projects, Seated Exercise, IT Drop in, Yoga, Bingo, Theatre, Galleries,  annual holiday, Museum Trips and much much more.

We also offer a friendly telephone chat service for people. You can refer yourself by email or telephone.

Are you 60+ or know someone who is and feeling isolated and/or in need or telephone assistance? As part of the Golden Years Programme we also have a Community Assistance Programme that offers a friendly chat service for older people. We can send activity packs, craft materials or make referrals to other agencies when needed.

Activities

We are slowly re-introducing activities for people over 60 in our Golden Years program. Please see any upcoming activities below and contact Jane for the latest information at goldenyears@spca.org.uk

MONDAY (16th) 12pm-1pm DICKENS & CAMDEN TALK / COFFEE & CAKE – Have a cup of tea and cake whilst listening to Tudor Allen, senior archivist, give his popular Dickens and Camden talk.

MONDAY 11.30am-1pm COFFEE & CAKE – Join us for a hot drink, cake and a natter.   

MONDAY 1.30-3pm GAMES – With over 40 games, cards and dominoes to choose from why not come along to our games session every Monday afternoon. 

TUESDAY 10.30am-12.30pm Walks Around Camden (Meet at SPCA) – Gentle walk around Camden, ending at a café.

TUESDAY 1pm-2pm BOCCIA – Seated all-ability indoor bowls game where you have to hit the target or ‘jack ball. 

TUESDAY 10th MARGATE DAY TRIP £5 – We Are Ageing Better and Golden Years are going on a joint coach trip to Margate. Places are very limited so please book & pay £5 for your seat in advance as you won’t be able to join the trip on the day. Coach pickup is in Eversholt Street. For health and safety you will need to give an emergency contact number for the trip and the coach company requires everyone to wear a face covering on the coach.

WEDNESDAY 11.30am-12.30pm BINGO – Fun, friendly session where you can win M&S vouchers courtesy of Autotrader. 

WEDNESDAY (4th Aug) 12.45pm-1.45pm BOOK CLUB – Friendly book club & we have free copies. If you would like to listen to the discussion without reading, you are welcome. The group is reading the first 10 chapters of’ Dear Mrs Bird’ by AJ Pearce.

WEDNESDAY IT DROP IN – Learn to send emails, do online shopping, use Zoom or Facebook.  Come along as and when you like. Please note –  Wed. 29th Sept. IT Drop in will actually take place 1.45pm – 2.45pm.

THURSDAY (19th, 26th) CURRENT AFFAIRS – Chat about the stories in the news.

FRIDAY 11am-12pm YOGA – Relaxing all-ability yoga session that can be done seated or on a yoga mat.

OTHER TRIPS & ONE OFF EVENTS

Join us for free days out at Kew Gardens (Thur 5th) Kenwood House (Thur 12th), Piano Recital in Regent Hall (Fri 6th), Natural History Museum* (Fri 13th), Joint Picnic in Regents Park with We Are Ageing Better (Fri 20th) and Jersey Boys Theatre trip at Trafalgar Theatre (Thur 26th). Seats are in the stalls. Please book for trips as tickets are limited.

Travel to Kew Gardens, the Piano Recital and Natural History Museum will be on underground/overground. At Kew Gardens, Kenwood House and Natural History Museum there will be a fair amount of walking.

*South Kensington Station is closed until 2022 so we will be walking to the Natural History Museum from Knightsbridge station (10-15 mins).

Autotrader have bought us premium tickets in the stalls for Jersey Boys so please only book if you are certain you can attend.

Golden Years Programme volunteer role description

Aim of the role

To be one of our valued Golden Years Volunteers who help us run fun weekly/ monthly/one-off activities for people aged 60+ living in Camden. Activities range from Café/pub socials, Singing, Yoga, Art History, daytrips, walk and visits to museums, galleries and theatre. You will make people feel welcome, have a chat and help out as needed. We also provide telephone support for older members.

Time commitment

Ideally, we would like you to commit to 1-2 hours per week for 3+ months but we also have opportunities for short-term, one-off events, day trips and annual holiday where times/days vary and will be agreed.

Location

Saint Pancras Community Association and other venues in Camden such as cafes, walks, day trips and home-based.

Main tasks

Tasks may vary. Not all tasks are expected and can be adapted to suit your interests and  needs

  • Facilitate groups/joint-run groups with activity leader
  • Welcome older people and provide support during activities
  • Help plan future activities and events and promote activities
  • Take registers for people attending events
  • Ensure SPCA’s policies on Covid-19, Safeguarding, Health and Safety are followed to ensure the health and safety of volunteers, older people and SPCA staff
  • Report any concerns/ issues to the Volunteer Coordinator
    Please note, personal care will not be carried out. All volunteers/ members/staff are expected to stay apart 2metre/1m+ (with face coverings), following Government guidelines.

Skills/Experience/Qualities

  • Be reliable, friendly and trustworthy
  • Good written and verbal communication with the ability to engage and communicate effectively with older people, other volunteers and SPCA staff.
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Experience of using Word, Excel and Zoom would be an advantage but not essential.

Additional information

You will be working with older adults so references and DBS checks are required.
